Chinese Kangxi Porcelain Reign Marks-Feet
Chinese Kangxi Porcelain Reign Marks
Chinese Porcelain Authentication A Visual Guide
"Foot rims are the window to the soul" (of porcelain anyway)
Ming Dynasty And Transitional Period Chinese Porcelains With Feet, they tell so much!
Often missing from books and reference guides on Chinese porcelains are good clear images of the bases and even the marks. While some do an "ok" job showing the reign marks, they are frequently very small and most often show nothing of the details or characteristics of the base itself. (Don;t you just hate that?)
Kangxi Period Porcelains with marks and Foot Rims |
"I wish I could see the foot", how many times have you said that?
This absence of more detailed images often leaves the reader, student, collector, curator and dealer frustrated wondering many things. After all their were numerous things made in China during different periods which were often nearly exact copies of things from previous periods. Often how the bases and feet look is your best indicator in making a decision or identifying already collected pieces. So we decided to do a post simply called, "Chinese Kangxi Porcelain Reign Marks-Feet"
- What color is the paste?
- What shape is the foot..
- Is the base glazed or un-glazed,
- How far down the foot does the glaze go?,
- Does the glaze end neatly...?
So, as we did with our posts on Ming Porcelains and Yixing we thought it might benefit collectors and dealers to put together a mountain of images of porcelains from the late Ming/ Early Qing period on this page.
The objects here focus mainly on the Kangxi Period (1662–1722).
We went through and plucked from a variety of sources including a large number from the "David Collection" held at the British Museum and from our own archives as many appropriate objects as we could to fill the void a little with this kind of information.
Below is a slide show of some of the images we've put together. BOOK mark us...these images might come in handy!

We've tried to organize them by age and period as much is possible, many can only be described for dating purposes by century..i.e. 17th C. or early 18th C.. etc. Many also have reign marks. More will be added as time goes on...
